Understanding the Basics

The ABCs (and D) of Medicare

Original Medicare is just the starting point. We’ll help you figure out what gaps you need to fill.

Part A (Hospital Insurance)

Covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.

Part B (Medical Insurance)

Covers certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.

Part C (Medicare Advantage)

An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare. These bundled plans include Part A, Part B, and usually Part D.

Part D (Medicare Advantage)

An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare. These bundled plans include Part A, Part B, and usually Part D.

Part G (Medicare Supplement plan)

Covers nearly all Medicare Approved Cost after A and B. (From Doctors and Hospitals) Doesn't Cover, Prescription, Dental, or vision- means you will need Part D and separate plans for Dental and Vision if you wish to have those

Your Two Main Options

Medicare Advantage vs. Supplement

Once you have Parts A & B, you generally choose one of two ways to get additional coverage.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

An “all-in-one” alternative to Original Medicare. These plans are offered by private companies approved by Medicare.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Helps pay some of the health care costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
